About Vettaikaramedu

About Vettaikaramedu:

Vettaikaramedu is one of the worst affected Villages during Tsunami 2004. 39 lives of our village got perished in it. It was located in the coast during Tsunami. Now in order to safeguard the remaining lives this Agriculture (Now Construction Laborers) based village has been relocated 5km away from the sea coast. Now it is in Keelakasakudy located in the municipal limits of Karaikal District of Puducherry Union Territory of Republic of India.

Demography:

Number of families: 65
Number of Death in Tsunami: 39
Number of Houses: 65
Number of People: 250
Number of Children: 70
Number of Old People: 30
Number of Expected Anganwadi Beneficiaries: 61
All people in this village are of Backward Class.

History:
Our village was initially located near the coast. Finally, after Tsunami 2004 it got its present location. Earlier all our families were practicing agriculture, after lack of job in agriculture 95% of our employment is from Construction work.

Geography:
It’s located at midst of Paddy fields. Now new settlements of Urban People are coming up near our village in place of paddy fields.
Services and Infrastructure Available to us.
All of us who were registered during Tsunami 2004 have a concrete made Home.
All our houses are connected with good road.
All our houses have drinking water supply.
All our houses have electricity supply.
Old People of our village get old age pension.
Many of us are getting benefits from Construction workers welfare schemes.

Concerns

* Anganwadi is needed as there are 61 un served children and young mothers here.
* Street light is needed as there is no functioning street light as of today.(5th January 2009)
* Houses constructed 3 year back are leaking, cracking and water is oozing from the floor.
(Was witnessed during Cyclone Nisha)
* Primary school up to 3rd standard is needed
* Under Sarva Siksha Abyan, non school going children need to be covered.
* Special attention is needed for 10th Standard students as their performance is very poor.
* Toilet in the houses of our village are not functional, 95% of us defecate in the open.
* Due to lack of pressure water is not reaching all houses.
* Community hall as in other Tsunami affected village is needed for our village.
* Burial Ground with proper infrastructure is needed.
